Please consider that the main action to ensure your site is as safe as possible, is keeping it updated. Also, consider that the update process in b2evolution is extremely simple. Finally, please also, before to move to any other software, consider that with most recent stable version of b2evo (5.0.6) you will be able to do all that you mentioned in the post, summarizing:

• Massive comments deletion.
• Block as much IP ranges as you need.
• Add captcha questions to your forms using the Captcha Questions Plugin.

Regarding the reCaptcha plugin that you commented before, that is a third-party plugin, and b2evolution team is not able to offer third-party support (yes, is sad :( ), but as you see, you do have plenty of other options to fight against spam.
