"The unrecognized extension is detected for file"

We're running 6.6.6_stable and in the admin > system > system log we are seeing a lot of entries with "The unrecognized extension is detected for file"

core file The unrecognized extension is detected for file <b>the_legend_ofzelda-_symphony_of_the_goddesses_master_quest_poster01.jpg</b> Empty object ID

core file The unrecognized extension is detected for file <b>the_legend_ofzelda-_majoras_mask_limited_edition_with_figurine_box_us_full.jpg</b> Empty object ID

core file The unrecognized extension is detected for file <b>puzzle_and_dragons_z_plus_puzzle_and_dragons_super_mario_bros_edition_box_us_thumb300.png</b> Empty object ID

Wondering:
a) what this is.
b) how do we address and fix it?

Can anyone help?

It is entered and allowed for that user / blog (well its my admin user account's blog too) so shouldn't be throwing any errors.. but it is.

@ppnsteve as I did in the screenshot attached to my previous comment, can you try to find some of those files in your File Manage, look for the exclamation sign (if any) and see its title?

That will give us more hints about the issue.

Not see any exclamation points at all in the file browser.. some of these images have been here for years, others are newer so dunno..

I did go ahead and bump up the value of the variable $filename_max_length to 96 just in case it was causing it (and for future uploads too)

still kinda weird as I can't find any cause for this.
