My b2evolution Version: Not Entered

I'm getting the following error when trying to install the software:

MySQL error!

Error establishing a database connection!

If you are running a PHP version below 4.3, please upgrade.

Warning: Wrong parameter count for mysql_connect() in /data/webserver/htdocs/robotics/inc/_misc/_db.class.php on line 344

It seems that the database config settings you entered don't work. Please check them carefully and try again...

1) How do I check my PHP version?
2) Is there something else that could be causing the error? Looking at line 344 I see its passing 5 parameters to the mysql_connect method. In my own coding, I've only passed three (site, login, and password).
