If you install something that has a file named "blueberry.php" and you already have a file with that name then you will lose your existing file. So that means the only way to install b2evolution at the root level without losing what you have is to make sure that you don't have file names it'll want to make. Backup everything you have, then do an install and see if any of the names match...
Otherwise what would happen? You install your shiny new software but it totally fails because it really needed to read/use "blueberry.php" BUT your server space already had that file name and it didn't get over-written so now it doesn't do what the new software wanted so the new software failed. Bummer eh?
