There are no explicit instructions for Eclipse, but you probably have setup a CVS repo with it already?!
1.8.x is in the "v-1-8" branch.
@balupton: using a stable branch from CVS can make sense, especially when using it on the deployment server.. a "cvs -q up -Pd" gives you the latest bugfixes.

1.8.2 is a fine release, cvs would just complicate things greatly if you are new to this like you said.
For the integration with eclipse i would have no idea.
