The problem is that comment renderer plugins are not set up yet. It's on the todo list. I'd recommend waiting until it's included in the core.

Apparently Sheena can make it work, but it still havent got a clue on how she's doing it...

Old version, but I'm not sure how old. She might be running a late-model .8 variant, but it won't work with .9* - I tried. Her directions are clear and they work to a certain degree, but all you get is the text associated with the smilie - no actual rendering.
