My b2evolution Version: Not Entered

Is there a way that the Page List Widget show a thumbnail of the posts image or a different image if one desires so?
I've seen that work in other blog scripts.

2 May 14, 2008 18:48

Quick answer? "no"

Long answer? It's possible to make a plugin that does that

Of course, you could just use the html widget as long as you don't constantly add pages ;)

The HTML Widget is of no use if the page changes quite much.
I would like you to look at this link http://tinyurl.com/yv3sjw
The center column has the title of each post and includes an image that is already in the post or a related picture. It also includes the number of comments.
The page's script is WP.
It would be very good to have this in b2evolution.
This would make the Page List Widget much more productive and interesting.

At this moment, but there are many things that b2evolution seems incapable of doing. This is a honest and as constructive criticism as a critic can be.
No matter what, I trust, like and will keep with b2evolution, but as far as themes and plugins, it is getting way behind other scripts.

Print Pages: can't be done... only on a per theme basis
PDF: Seems there's No interest in doing such a plugin
Page List Widget with Images: Can be done, but ???
Send to Friend: ???
Multiple Polls in one page: ???
Gallery: ???
Lightbox: ???
Publishing videos from other providers than the ones in the Dasboard: ???
New Themes: ?????????????????????????????????

Hope this answer doesn't bother people too much, but there is some undeniable truths in what is said here and I wish someone could do something about some things.

Not true. You use the HTML widget to point to a page, then edit the page as much as you want. The URL doesn't change so no problem with using the HTML widget to point to it.

gcasanova wrote:

Write the plugin that can print pages for b2evolution across the entire spectrum of all skins now and forever and I'll eat an ostrich. The flip side of that is: severely limit what anyone anywhere can do with a skin and I'll write the plugin for you.

gcasanova wrote:

I reckon yeah no one is interested in writing a PDF maker because that feature already exists as a service provided by outside parties. Personally I don't even see the point to it given what PDF is really good at: forcing a printed document to look identical no matter what fonts a user has or settings their printer has. For printing a web page what's the point? If you've got something very specific in mind then chances are you can already create PDF files ... so why bother expecting a blog app to do it?

But hey take a shot at it! Learn about how to make a plugin and have fun with it. You might not make what you set out to do, but you *might* figure out how to do something else you think is way cool.

gcasanova wrote:

I've thought of doing the first and started doing the second. The thing with the first is why would I bother writing a plugin when, to me, hacking the widget is the better way to go? Given that I just completed my idea of core hacks and am much more into doing my "translation supporter" installation, it's hard to find the time for getting into widget hacks. BTW I think half of them need hacking.

On the "send to friend" thing I was pretty close but gave up due to it doesn't really interest me. I should do it though because people tend to think it's cool and honestly I think it helps get your blog promoted further.

gcasanova wrote:

I've no interest in any of these. But hey no one is stopping you from making the effort required to produce and share these ideas. Open source includes you yah?

gcasanova wrote:

The YouTube plugin has more available than the VideoPlug plugin. So *exactly* what do you want to embed that isn't in either of the publicly available plugins? BTW the stock VideoPlug has already been hacked a few times to increase the range of offerings. My copy is up to 8 buttons, and adding more is easy as pie, although eventually it gets old to have that many buttons that aren't used.

ADD to the list of what's available instead of just saying "I want". Seem good?

EdB, Can you make the Free HTML Widget act as the Page List Widget? Like a believe its called, an aggregator? If it does then it is waht I want. I need that whenever something gets published in Blog B, it automatically appears in Blog A as does with the Page List Widget. What I'm asking also is that if it could integrate an image contained in the post of the other blog, then it would be perfect.
An image, as you know, sells quite a lot.

As of PDF, the idea is NOT to integrate third parties stuff. That, to me, looks very messy. And, although there are PDF Virtual printers that convert oages into PDF, not everyone is technical savvy and knows that. You may not see any interest ina PDF document but that's you, there are miillions who do, rationally or irrationally, but who are we to judge them. The case is, people ask for this service, whay can't we give it to them.

Now for the rest of the widgets you're not interested in developing, like you say, its open source and anybody can develop them and that is why I'm writing in a forum, so that anybody, with the necessary knowledge, the time, and want, can listen to me and design some of the mentioned widgets or plugins.

I don't have the expertise or else I would be publishing widgets, plugins, tools, themes, etc.
No offenses and no need to expel me from the forum or the community, but sometimes I feel b2evolution hears, and does it well, when a problem arises with what exists, but it doesn't happen the same way when it comes to users needs that b2evolution doesn't have.
I don't think how listening to what people wants can hurt b2evolution, on the contrary, more people, more help, more donations, etc.

So please, don't take it on me, my words only pretend to meke the whole concept better. I like it as it is, but as all things in live in can be better.
The link I have you is a news site, not a beautiful one, but its Nº 1 in my country. It has the Page List Widget with images, several polls in one page that have helped determine people's preferences in our next governors and mayors elections, etc.

Video should include Liveleak, not that I'm morbid, but they show videos that nobody dares.

/me is not offended ...... much :|

The main problem you have with b2evo compared to other popular blog/cms platforms is that there are very few users that code/skin, which means that all the plugins and stuff come from the few ( hmmmm ... why do I hear Winston Churchill in my mind? ).

So a widget/plugin/enhancement/new skin has 2 chances "do I need it" and "can I be arsed coding it".

When you get "wtf, why can't someone code this, it must be bloody simple" ( not aimed at you ;) ) posts, it kinda raise the heckles "if it's that bloody simple then crack open notepad huh?"

Personally I'd like to see evo get more popular so we can gain more coders that turn out really cool stuff ....... I could even put up with a few more wanna be coders like EdB, they'd just make us look even cooler when we unleash the next "cool as fuck" plugin/widget/skin ;)

For a laugh though, crack open a plugin that does something like what you want and read the code, it's often not that difficult to bend it to your will, and we're always here to help if you get stuck ;)

I'm still not coding a pages widget that shows images though huh? :|

¥åßßå, EdB, and John, remember my intention is not to offend ANYBODY (well I would like to offend the president of my country, which isn't the US, but that is another matter...). So If I offended in any aspect I apologize. :oops:

Now, I think I'm on the same path of all b2evo fans; I want more for and from it. No doubt Version 2 was a huge step forward, but still, seeing other scripts you can see they have some things that could be useful for us too.
Useful would then become attractive and attractive would get more people and... you know the rest of the story.

When I asked about PDF, EdB, which apparently doesn't like the idea (it's his absolute right) said there are plenty of outside services that do that. True, but would you like to see a b2evo blog with comments from Haloscan, PDF from Service X, RSS aggregator (or however is called) from CoffeeCup RSS News, Gallery from Flickr, search from Google... Its like having a great car and start changing pieces or adding others that the car didn't come with. A Ferrari-Lada-Fiat-Ford-Saipa-Vespa... hybrid 8|

B2evo could be like a Mercedes; just ask the factory and they'll personalize it (almost) to your needs.

Now I know nothing of what I'm asking is easy; if it was, it would have probably been done already. I just hope and wish b2evo moves toward that direction.

I know I'm not far from what others are asking, else on march 24, FP wouldn't have asked for help:
http://b2evolution.net/news/2008/03/24/b2evolution-custom-developers-designers-wanted

So, no offenses, just want the very best for b2evo, and thus for me too, because all the blogs I work or install for my people are b2evolution.

9 May 16, 2008 05:43

How would you use PDF in a blog app? And ... uh ... what's PDF got to do with comments and haloscan?

By the way not offended either. Just wondering why other people don't give it a shot themselves. Like, no one magically knows how to use a browser or email client or blog app - but we all take the time to learn. Well, those of us here have learned which is different from everyone ;) And seriously: just crack open a plugin that either is sorta like what you want or seems pretty simple and happens to be small. You'll start to be able to say "okay this bit somehow does that part" and thus be on your way to crafting up a plugin.

Free HTML do the job of the page list widget confuses me because, well, page list already does that job.

Getting images OF posts would be way cool. Somehow the server would have to know what the browser finally gets, take a screen capture of it, and thumbnail it down. I've no idea how to do that. Sometimes I think snippets of posts in the sidebar again would be cool. Like in the linkblog if you have text it used to show and (I'm pretty sure) now it doesn't. But that's different from capturing a shot of the page yah?

10 May 16, 2008 16:32

Haloscan, comments, etc. have nothing to do with PDF. I was trying to make a point by saying that you can add third party widgets, plugins, tools, apps... to achieve whatever you want: Convert to PDF, Show the weather, Newsfeeds, mini-browsers, twitters, etc. But that, to me, doing so looks ugly and unprofessional. I would rather have everything made by the B2evo community.
I mentioned the CoffeCup Newsfeeds. This application shows the images that are part of a post. But I'm absolutely sure I can't do something like that.
I may try and open some plugins and see if I learn something useful. But there are people that are hundreds of years ahead of me and that can achieve something in a snap. You are one of them.

Now, why nobody is doing what I believe to be so important, I don't know. Somehow b2evolution has to become more... something. If you Google b2evolution, you get aprox. 6.230.000 results, the other script gets 205.000.000.
B2evo is better, I've tried both, but the other attracts more people. And that attraction may be related to the other script having more pre-made themes, widgets, plugins... people like that.
In our case, the last plugin was published on May 1. Before that you published the excellent Widget Manager on April 3.

Again, no means to offend, especially you, who are always fast to help solving problems and whom has created some pretty good plugins.
But I want more for b2evolution.
I want PDF
I want Send to Friend
I want Print Page
I want Images in excerpts of other blogs posts published with the Page List Widget
I want my own TV

12 May 16, 2008 22:25

This is what I'm talking about!
But, the widget has a bug (maybe), I'm getting an error when changing the number of words that should appear as excerpt. When changing from 0 to 50, I get:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function balanceTags() in /.../.../public_html/plugins/am_rss_reader_plugin/_am_rss_reader.plugin.php on line 363

Also, can you recommend me how to change the size of the picture so that it never exceeds 220 px wide and is always centered? :oops:

But this is exactly one of the widgets I'm looking for. Thanks ¥åßßå

:D :D :D

13 May 17, 2008 09:37

I hate it when they rename core functions :-S

change this bit ( 362/3 ) :

			// restrict content to required number of words, balance the tags out and strip any empty tags
			$output = preg_replace( '~<([\s]+?)[^>]*?></\1>~is', '', balanceTags( substr( $content, 0, $i ) )
.( $limit ? '' : ' <a href="'.$url.'" title="'.$this->disp_params['continued_title'].'">'
.$this->disp_params['continued_text'].'</a>' ) );

to read :

			// restrict content to required number of words, balance the tags out and strip any empty tags
			$output = preg_replace( '~<([\s]+?)[^>]*?></\1>~is', '', balance_tags( substr( $content, 0, $i ) )
.( $limit ? '' : ' <a href="'.$url.'" title="'.$this->disp_params['continued_title'].'">'
.$this->disp_params['continued_text'].'</a>' ) );

You can handle the images with css for compliant browsers, otherwise you'd need to use javascript

.feedcontent img{
max-width:220px;
margin:0 auto;
}

¥

14 May 18, 2008 02:19

¥åßßå:

I followed your instructions exactly (I think), and this is what happened:

1) The number of words changed to the number I wanted (50). No problem
2) The images never resized. They kept its original size. I added the CSS code to the skins style sheet.

.feedcontent img{
max-width:220px;
margin:0 auto;
}

3) As the size of the images never changed, I deleted the widget and added it again, but this time the plugin only showed Title, Date and Author, no content, no images.

I changed the cache to 1 minute to see if that was the problem, but noting, I cleared the pre-rendered cache, nothing.
I checked the site in Opera and Firefox, same results.

I'm completely lost now.

15 May 18, 2008 04:13

I figured something... you have to add the:

$content$

Inside (at the end) of the Item Html: for the Max Length function to work.

Still, images are not reducing to my desired size.

16 May 18, 2008 04:46

Ok, so you have to override the CSS Class: with the CSS params for the image.

The last thing to do would be, to resize the image evenly; although the image is now 220 wide, it's kept its length...

Another thing I would like to achieve is to get the "continue..." at the end of the excerpt's last word. Right now there are like three lines and then the continue... is shown; almos as part of the new title:

detestar a Rivero cuando Chávez lo imponga como candidato en algún estado

continúa...
Hiphopero acribillado era solicitado por varios delitos ( 22/04/2008 )

It would be perfect if it could be like this:

detestar a Rivero cuando Chávez lo imponga como candidato en algún estado continúa...

Hiphopero acribillado era solicitado por varios delitos ( 22/04/2008 )

If the image can be resized properly, and the continue... be put at the end of the excerpt, you will have made one of the best plugins...

17 May 18, 2008 09:29

You can use css for pretty much everything ( you'd need to link me to where your displaying your feed so I can look at the images )

feed html

<h3 class="feed_title"><a href="$feed_url$">$feed_title$</a></h3>
<div class="feed_description">$feed_description$</div>
$feed_items$

Item html

<div class="feed_content">
<div class="feed_wrap">
<h4 class="feed_title"><a href="$url$">$title$</a></h4>
$content$
</div>
</div>

css

.feed_title a,
.feed_title a:visited{
color:#whatever;
text-align:center;
text-decoration:none;
}

.feed_title a:hover{
color:#whatever2;
}

.feed_description{
text-align:center;
}

.feed_content{
margin:0 0 2em 0;
}

The images in your feed specify width and height, hence why the css is failing.

It wouldn't be impossible to get the plugin to change shit like that, but images smaller than your width become a problem

If by "cool" you mean "bloated beyond belief, little to no documentation, horrible support, abysmal interfacing, and overall generally only usefull if you don't actually want to use your blog for anything beyond a stress tester for your server" then you will want to keep your eye open for new plugins from AstonishMe ;)

I have to remember I want to come back to the original intent of this thread, but I'll chime in again without a product to say this: ¥åßßå's plugins generally speaking rock hard but (IMHO) sometimes go way too deep and don't have enough settings to make them really cool. My plugins tend to go the other way: fairly simple stuff that basically work well and have way more settings than required because I always think "yeah but someone might want to do this and someone else might want to to that". The end result is that everyone has to do something to get a simple little gizmo on their sidebar :roll:

So back on track here a bit: images in the page list widget I think might not be good, but it might be because (here it comes...) "someone might want to do this and someone else might want to to that". Hacking the stock widgets into something way too cool is on my list of things to do today. Along with about 37 other things that haven't been done today for any given value of 'today', so 'today' is both subjective and ... probably not the same thing most people think of when they think of that word ;)

RRSS that Works: http://www.anajuliajatar.com/blog7.php?tempskin=_rss2

AM RSS Reader Version: 1.2

In my blog: http://www.guillermocasanova.net the plugin works fine. The difference from the page in which it is not working is that the plugin was there before I upgraded to version 3.3.X, in the new blog, where it is not working properly, I installed it after the upgrade.

Also, Why, I don't know, as I tested the page on Safari for Windows, the plugin works. It also works in Chrome in my desktop PC, but not in my Notebook.
The plugin works while you're logged using Firefox but stops working as you log out.

Try disabling and re-enabling the plugin.

The error "file_get_contents(http:) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in ..." has nothing to do with b2evo upgrade.

Get the latest SimplePie class from here http://simplepie.org/downloads/simplepie_1.2.zip . Replace the simplepie.inc file and see if it works, you won't make it worse anyway.

I don't know what you mean but two blogs are on different servers. The one which is not working is on WebServerX, and the working one is on Apache

Again, try to compare config files from both servers.
And make sure you have either enabled CURL or "allow_url_fopen on" in php.ini on the *bad* server.

Ok, then this is the case

Yabba can you post a link to your zip please? I remember that there was an issue with $current_charset vs $evo_charset in your plugin.
I use $SimplePie->set_output_encoding( $evo_charset ); in Feed importer

The data could not be converted to UTF-8

I'll upload and link the zip the moment I download it and open it myself ;)

Don't worry, I found it already :)

See if this helps. Replace the following

// match the blogs locale
global $current_charset;
$SimplePie->set_output_encoding( $current_charset );

with

// match the blogs locale
global $evo_charset;
$SimplePie->set_output_encoding(  $evo_charset );

or this

// match the blogs locale
$SimplePie->set_output_encoding( 'utf-8' );

or even this, for a fun

// match the blogs locale
$SimplePie->set_output_encoding( 'iso-8859-1' );

55 Dec 18, 2009 09:54

Heh, already found and changed ;)

sam2kb and ¥åßßå

Changed

PHP:

// match the blogs locale
global $current_charset;
$SimplePie->set_output_encoding( $current_charset );

to

PHP:

// match the blogs locale
global $evo_charset;
$SimplePie->set_output_encoding(  $evo_charset );

Now the RSS that was working is showing Spanish characetrs as it should, not as garbled letters as before, but the two thata aren't working, still say:

Warning: file_get_contents(http:) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/anajulia/public_html/plugins/am_rss_reader_plugin/simplepie.inc on line 7853
The data could not be converted to UTF-8

Would it help to post here a copy of the php.ini of the server in which the blog with problems is located? But, allow_url_fopen were ON when the problem started and I turned the OFF but that didn't fix the problem.

The problem blog is http://www.anajuliajatar.com In this blog, there are three sections or "blogs: Breves, English and Artículos (Spanish).

The first two, Breves and English have problems reading the Feeds, but the other, Artículos (Spanish), works fine.

The three work fine when logged in, but two of them stop working when logged out.

For kicks, try changing this bit of code

  function init_display( $params = array() )
  {

to read :

  function init_display( $params = array() )
  {
    return;

Changed the code but nothing happened.

The suggested code broke the one RSS feed that was working, undid the code and it works again.

61 Dec 18, 2009 14:48

oops, missed a line :roll:

  function init_display( $params = array() )
  {
    $this->disp_params = $params;
    return;

62 Dec 18, 2009 14:53

With the corrected code, the error disappeared but also did the working Feed. Its like there is no plugin there anymore, no errors, no feed... nothing.
Undid it again. :(

63 Dec 18, 2009 15:02

The code disabled the plugin or, when undoing the code the plugin was disabled. I enabled it again without the new code and the error is there again.
I also applied the code again, disabled then enabled the plugin but the error is still there.
Right now the code has been changed to your latest suggestion. But the errors are still there.
Should I leave the code as changed?

64 Dec 18, 2009 15:20

Leave the code at whatever state keeps your one working feed working ;)

Any chance you could email/pm me an admin login?

Just sent you a PM with access info.

66 Dec 18, 2009 17:37

Cool, might be tomorrow before I get a chance to play with it .... I'll try and not break your blog when I do ;)

¥

67 Dec 18, 2009 18:51

Try not to break the blog or else my neck WILL be broken! :)

I really appreciate the time you're taking to fix this, thanks!

68 Dec 18, 2009 18:57

Yabba please report back your fixes when you cure/kill the blog

You did find it! In Locales I had three languages enabled: English (US) utf8, English (US) latin1 and Spanish (VE) utf8.
I disabled English (US) latin1 and the AM RSS Reader is now working everywhere with a minor glitch, now in the blog that worked all the time, Spanish Characters in the English feed section are garbled:
http://www.anajuliajatar.com/index.php?blog=5

Castañeda

instead of

Castañeda

Any suggestion?

Please check the blog now to see if everything works on your side as it should...

Thanks!

:D

All 3 work fine on my side. I see "continúa..." which means that accented characters work too.

What you should do is make sure you set the default and blog locales to utf-8
