I kinda like it except one thing: your linkback to b2evolution stands out like a sore thumb. Don't remove it though! Open source projects need all the link-love they can get. You might want to go with a text version instead of the button you're using. I'm thinking a darker green so it blends in without being lost - or jumping out.
Disclaimer: I think using dark grey instead of black is an artistic statement.

Thanks for your feedback guys - now I've go to find time to add more
content, the main site is keeping busier than ever.
Just one question - does a b2e upgrade overwrite everything? I mean
do I have to keep track of all the little adjustments I make in the custom
folder?
With Season's Greetings,

b2evo won't overwrite anything you do as long as you have /skins/myskinnamegoeshere/.
If you are upgrading from like 0.9 to 1.8 then you will need to apply changes to your skin, you can a tutorial on what you need to do somewhere.

Hello Folks,
Well, I felt that the text was too small, especially as my main visitors
could well be "people of a certain age" - so I've taken the bull by the
horns and enlarged it all - the CSS changes took about 5 hours - phew...

Good good, no errors or warnings so your doing great :)
Can't give you any real suggestions besides follow standards which is what your already doing, as the skin's not really my style.
But glad your having a go, keep it up :)
