[2.x] "More Separator" not working

My b2evolution Version: 2.x

I'm a beginner to b2evolution and I'm having trouble figuring out how to use the "more separator". Some of the other features on the post-form also seem not to be working, so I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong. When I click "more separator" at the spot that I want the post to be split, the cursor simply disappears and no changes are made. When I manually type <!-- more --> at the same location, the post shows no alterations. Please help!

Do you have javascript turned off?

Perhaps. How would I check that? If it is off, how would I turn it on?

Well, it's usually a browser setting

Javascript is definitely enabled by the browser. Any other thoughts?

somehow it started working. i do have another related question though: the extended version of each post (after the "more separator") includes the "follow up" line. how can i get rid of this line or change it to say something else?
