That will be dangerous for non-techies like you and me ;) And we all know how a small, minor, easily missed error or typo can lead to pulling-hairs out :p
Additionally, there are still hosts that do not allow editing of .htaccess or doesn't allow it all, reason as always "security" and "shared hosting".
Besides, you usually only need to edit your .htaccess once ;)
