Image upload stopped working

For a number of months I've had no problem uploading and inserting images into my posts.

Today, I could not. Access to the media folder was denied.

What could have changed? I made no changes in file permissions.

Reset your permissions to make sure. Then you could ask your host if they made any changes to PHP on your server.

Is it normal that I have to give write and execute permission for all users for the media folder?

I cannot upload otherwise.

Is this safe?

Those are the permissions I use for the media folder. I think it's fine.
