The hack which you can get from this blog posting changes category sidebar links in archive display mode so that they point to the category in a particular archive (i.e. a particular month, week, etc.) instead of the entire category.

You can see an example for new category sidebar links in archives on my weblog.

This patch will be required in conjunction with my Google Sitemap code for b2evolution (if I will release it).

But the patch which changes category sidebar links is somehow questionable. Is anyone against this change? Will we include it into the next release? Anyway I myself want this patch as I use it with my Google Sitemap code.

Or may be we will make new vs. old mode of category sidebar links in archives configurable?

From what I've seen in the CVS code, the category and archive sidebar sections will both be done through plugins. So it should be pretty easy to modify the plugins and rerelease them with the changes.

Hi porton! Could you explain in more detail what your hack does? I personally couldn't see any difference in the categories list on your basic main blog page or the archives page for any given month for the same blog. I looked at a couple of blogs too, so perhaps you're not using the hack? I'm guessing, but what I think you've achieved is to have the category list ONLY display categories in the specific archive record the visitor has selected. I therefore expected to see different categories and post counts when I visited a monthly archive, and since I didn't I feel compelled to ask.

Also, with regards to google site maps, check out http://forums.b2evolution.net/viewtopic.php?t=4466 and see if it serves the same purpose. Perhaps you have a different hack in mind? Something that provides a unique feature not found in alianzo's hack, or maybe generates it in a different (maybe better) way? I tried alianzo's hack and thought it was kinda neato, but decided it's not my problem to help google index web pages. When they pay me I'll help, but until then they have to crawl me until I ban them ;)

The more hacks the merrier! Life is Good when you can hack the heck out of software!!!

Consider for example http://b2e.ex-code.com/index.php/porton/2005/08/ archive on my blog.

The link for Blogging category is http://b2e.ex-code.com/index.php/porton/2005/08/?cat=23 because I have applied my patch. Before the patch it was http://b2e.ex-code.com/index.php/porton?cat=23 that is

/2005/08/

was missing in the URL.

The issue is whether we should make it a persistent change in b2evo. Is anyone against the following change of the URL in sidebar?

http://b2e.ex-code.com/index.php/porton?cat=23 -> http://b2e.ex-code.com/index.php/porton/2005/08/?cat=23

Thanks for the note. Yes, it is of the same purpose. After your note I borrowed some ideas from there.

However my Google Sitemap is much more advanced regarding features.

ow I cannot explain advanced features of my sitemap in details (and it is yet too alpha).

Now I see. Great idea for a hack, and one that I will certainly come back to and take advantage of, but I don't think it's ready for prime time yet. For example how is the visitor to know the categories list is not pulling content from across the history of the blog? I believe it should identify itself as "month-specific categories", and displays the accurate count of posts it will find. For example http://b2e.ex-code.com/index.php/porton/2005/09/?cat=23 shows 2 posts because you have two posts in cat23 in September, but the sidebar says (7). 7 is wrong - for that link in that month. Also, have you tried this hack with "Use extra-path info" turned off? I imagine it will work but it makes sense to test because not everyone can use that feature.

As to getting this in the core, that's up to Francois. There is a "Feature requests" forum that I believe Francois checks out, so you might want to post a note over there summarizing your hack and include a link to this thread.

I gotta get busy on some of my little projects! My list of things to come back to is starting to get out of hand :(
