Kovox ..
Welcome to b2evo! :)
(1) We don't use the upload feature. We just use an FTP client (FileZilla, which is free) to upload JPGs/GIFs to a folder of our choosing, then we modified the [img] button in the back office to insert the <img> tag code we wanted.
(2) No, there isn't a way to "upload an image to the sidebar", but what you can do is edit the _main.php file, in the sidebar area, adding a <img src="http://yoursite.com/yourImgFolder/image.jpg" alt="description to show when message can't be loaded, for whatever reason" title="whatever you want for hover text" />.
(3) Change your categories for the blog in the backOffice ... under the "Categories" tab. This should create/change your modules in the right hand side.
(4) No, just like real life, there is no idiot-proof manual for b2evo. Best way to learn is via this forum, trial-and-error, the search function (in this forum) and perserverance.
Good luck and welcome!

1. Make sure your 'media' folder is writable by the server, then when you're posting click on 'Upload file/image'.
2. Edit the sidebar by editing the skin you're using. /skins/skin-you're-using/_main.php
3. See #2. Or you might want to use a linkblog.
