Think about it... Each article's backoffice could have an extra field, "banner". Supply a URL or file of an image and you get something like what the big image on this page does: http://www.longnow.org/shop/

It can really spice up articles and make the b2evo system feel less tamplatey.

thoughts? i'd make for a nice plugin. Is it possible? I can even look into it and help develop such a feature.

Do you mean the images alongside each post? I think people have written about that here on the forums before. It might be worth searching around for to see what's already been done. It would be a nice plugin for some people, I'm sure.

Nope. I mean for the entire page... et al www.longnow.org www.longnow.org/shop etc.

Would be nice to have "front page" mode, "per article" mode and maybe more... It'd be an additional field in the backoffice "Write" tab, when composing an article.
