UPDATE

I found that I had to disable in the php.ini zlib compression:

zlib.output_compression = Off
zlib.output_compression_level = -1

As soon as zlib compression is enabled the in-skin messages and contacts are not displayed - just a empty - white page

This is php 5.2 and 5.3 by the way. I don't know about 5.4

I also have this problem. Did you try in Chrome/Chromium? For me, it works fine. So I was thinking it's something not related to server (mine is PHP5.3 also).
On my localhost computer (PHP 5.5), I don't have this problem.

Yes I tried IE 10/11, Firefox 32 and the latest Chrome => no difference.
At my hosting provider zlib work with php 5.2 and 5.3 in b2evo. release 5.0.9 but not in 5.1.2

On my own webserver I have php 5.4 there it also works with the b2evo 5.1.2

Thanks for reporting. I reproduced this issue using Firefox and Safari, with PHP 5.2 as you said. The developers are already aware, so they will check why it's happening and how to fix it.
