I have pretty much the same issue. Edit gives me content of most previous posts. But posts no longer render. Readers can see title and, strangely, any links included in the pages. It's an old version, 2.4.1, but I have never been able to update to a later version: kept getting a MySQL incompatible error.

On some posts, content has disappeared from edit screen as well. Beginning of posts still appear in dashboard tab.

It worked on Tuesday night, not on Wednesday night.

Any help?

Thank you, fplanque. I appreciate your thoughtful guidance.

Actually, we (it's a family project) are currently on bluehost, which is near the top of your list of recommended hosts. b2evolution was working quite well until we tried to upgrade as recommended a couple of years ago. The upgrade kicked us offline until bluehost managed to restore our site from a backup they had made a week or so before. We have been kind of white knuckled about going through that again.

But now we are unable to make new posts unless we jerry-rig the formatting (surrounding the post with the "a" element and a font color setting it to black). Ugh.

So it's evident that you are right. The choice is either toughing out the upgrade in some way or finding some alternative to b2evolution. That will be too bad. We like the software a lot.

One reason we like the software is folks like yourself willing to help folks like us.

Hello burrd!
I solved my problem with my also old version, changing the PHP Version to upload an article (till I'll found the money to upgrade my B2Evo :) ). Current PHP Native of my server is 5.5, I prepare all the article on my notepad +++, I change PHP to 5.2, copy and paste, preview, modify and correct if neccessary, save and afterwards returns to the native PHP Version (or really to 5.4).

We will re-test bluehost then.

Can you guys pleaaaaaaaaaaaase post screenshots of your errors instead of making us guess how to reproduce them?

kept getting "a" MySQL incompatible error.

This is insanely vague. Why not show us the EXACT error?

Thanks, fplanque. A reasonable criticism on "kept getting a MySQL incompatible error." It is insanely vague.

In our case, that is mostly because the error happened so long ago. Years, in fact. The recovery took days, and involved long distance efforts of multiple family members. We all have full time professional jobs and our time was limited, so it was a significant effort.

We lost most of the readership we had built up in the few years we had been posting. We were burned so badly we never tried again.

Now, years later, the exact wording of that original error is elusive, and a screenshot is not possible.

That is why we seek help only on the newest issue. I would not encourage anyone to reproduce the pain of that long ago crash of our entire site.

We have just been hoping to recover our ability to publish complete posts. The understandable criticisms are a small price to pay if our frustrated critics can help us with our current problem.

We are now relying on the cache to keep our previous posts on the web.

@burrd OK, so if you don't have this issue now, of course you can"t make a screenshot.

So are you running version 2.4.1 now?

We cannot possibly be of any help on a version that is 8 years old.

I can only speculate:

  • Maybe you have a faulty plugin. Try temporarily deleting all non-standard plugins from your plugin directory.
  • Maybe your site actually got hacked. I can say for sure there were security issues that have been patched in the last 8 years.

Now, without advising a different host because bluehost should be fine, let me reformulate my advice to you:

  1. backup your database,
  2. Create a new empty database
  3. restore your backup in the empty database
  4. install the b2evolution 6.6.7 files a subfolder of your website and configure it to point to the new database
  5. run the install/upgrader of 6.6.7 and give us screenshots of what you get.

All this will not break your current site as long as you are working in a separate database and in a subfolder.

Alternatively you can try all that on your local machine if you have WAMP or XAMP or MAMP installed to simulate a webserver.

Note: more details about all this in the manual: http://b2evolution.net/man/unexpected-error-during-upgrade

Thank you, fplanque. A solid suggestion well worth the try.

I'll report back with what I hope will be our success.

Thank you again for your help.
