Maybe you should take a look of this manual page: http://b2evolution.net/man/weird-redirects. Please, let us know if some of those advices worked for your case, specially the clearing cache one, because redirects are too sticky and make tests having them in the middle is an annoying process.

I've tried all the suggestion in the weird redirects list (shortcut you provided).
Also researched other related posting, can't seem to resolve

It seem to only happen on the admin.php page (or that's as far as I can get)
for example I can login as admin and change profile but I can't get to the dashboard

Ok, I've solved this...

I am using Abyss web server and once I took the .htaccess file for the apache configuration and applied it correctly to my server configuration I did finally get it to go.

Over the major hurdles now, at first look, the looks nicely done !
