My b2evolution Version: 1.9.2

I've been using b2evolution for about a month and love it, my question is regarding asynchronous email notification.
I often write 2 or 3 articles at a time and post them with a delay of up to a week, my understanding of the asynchronous mode is that the email notification is delayed until the article actually posts however this doesn't seem to be working for me, the article posts fine when triggerd but no email notification is sent. If I select immediate from the notification options it emails the announcement when I save the article regardless of the post date of the article (which is what I would expect). Scheduler just shows them as pending, even the ones in the past.
what am I missing?
