That's great and all, but what if I really don't want my URL's to look like an absolute train wreck of parameters? Are we saying that the absolute URL code doesn't work?

No, we're saying that some servers can't handle it and the above is the solution to that problem ;)

There's nothing magical about parameter-based vs. directory-based in terms of a server being able to "handle it." The broken code or poorly documented migration steps (I'd find it difficult to believe there are none) on the other hand would be a valid explanation. I've tried the same thing the original poster did, switching to URL-based and it didn't work on my end either.
admin > blog settings > [blog name] > urls ( or summat )
Change everything to whatever looks like "use ID"
