Step 1) Download FireFox browser (if you don't already have it)
Step 2) Get the developer plug-in HERE (allows you to edit CSS LIVE ... type CSS changes, see the effect on your site. Screw up? ... REFRESH. Back to square one. LIKE YOUR CHANGES? Save new CSS file(s).
Step 3) Learn CSS for free at W3 Schools
Cheers,

PS - CSS is only 1/2 the battle. Undoubtedly, you will want to MOVE/ADD/EDIT/DELETE stuff in your skin's _main.php file too. (So ... not to overwhelm you ... learning php & xhtml helps!) W3 Schools has an XHTML tutorial too.
Simple changes here and there in css style sheet can change the look and feel of the default page. However if all of your blogs are linked to the same skin you will not only be changing the default page but all of the pages. If you need help changing something specific on your page, post a link and I'd be more than happy to show you what you need to change. Again don't hesitate to ask.
