Firefox has a spell check extension. I think it supports several languages.

nephaste, I'm just finishing up a spellcheck plugin for b2evolution 1.8 that supports several languages, including french. It's powered by the Google Spell Check API. If you're using a recent cvs version, I can package the plugin and let you try it out. I would love to have some feedback.
