I almost forgot that there is another method, also mentioned by @lturner in the other post: creating each menu item as a "Sidebar link" post and use the Simple Sidebar Links list widget.

Yes, it works now.
I just placed the widget in the wrong section.
Let's call this "a newbie's confusion" and put it down to learning.

There are two easy ways to create menus in any sidebar. Using the "Any URL" option of the Menu link widget (http://b2evolution.net/man/menu-link-widget), as shown in the first screenshot above, and using the Free HTML widget, as suggested by @lturner here: http://forums.b2evolution.net/topic-21822 (see the second screenshot above).
