My b2evolution Version: Not Entered

Hi,
I'm currently using Greymatter and use it to display the 3 most recent posts on the home page and other pages of my site (www.thecclc.org) that reside outside the b2evo directory. I would like to display the titles of the three most recent posts from a certain category or author and not the whole blog. I seem to be unable to do this with Greymatter so I decided to upgrade to less antiquated and actively developed script.

I've installed b2evo and have it up and running and have read through the documentation, but can't seem to find anything specific to what I want to do. It looks this might be done with stub files, but I'm at a loss as to how to go about it.
