My b2evolution Version: 2.x
I thought that this parameter would somehow make images fit the skin, but that doesn't seem to be the case. For example evopress says
'image_size' => 'fit-400x320',
, but when I inserted images via the file manager it gave width and height attributes based on exactly what the file size really is. It also displays them as they really are, meaning it did not shrink the image to fit 400 wide.
Anyone work through this yet?

I don't actually use this feature so I could be completely wrong ... nothing new there then huh? :P
I believe that only images which are "linked" to a post are resized. So far the only two ways I've found to link an image are :
1) Hit filemanager, tick a few image boxes and hit the big button marked "make post".
2) When writing a post, if you scroll waaaaaay down you'll see a lil permalink icon with "link files" next to it, click it and you get taken to the filemanager where you can hit other permalink icons next to the images of your choice.
