I understand it is very old but it s not used that much. An upgrade terrifies me LOL.
I don't think the content is going into the database at all.
I've checked via phpmyadmin and browsed evo_posts and no new entries are going in.
I think I can prove this as when I write a test post and preview, the content is missing and this is before I have saved it to the database

it should not suddenly stop working..Have you/host recently made any changes to the server ? As the version is rather old, it might not be working with the new version of the software.
You can try getting a backup, loading it on your localhost, replace the original files from a fresh zip of your b2 version. If that fails, try disabling your plugins, if that also fails, my above assumption is the best bet i guess.

I haven't made any changes.
Am I correct in thinking if I replace the whole blogs/ folder from a backup that I made 12 months ago and also replace an sql backup from 12 months past then there is nothing further I can do with this setup.
I'm in the process of running a test upgrade on another server but this opens up a whole new can of worms as my backup sql's don't work as they are with the lastest b2evo :(

You just need to go through upgrade procedure. If you get errors, post them here and we will guide you through them.
To me it looks like the host was upgraded to PHP 5.3

I'm a little confused.
I have created a new blog with 4.1.4. on another server
I have my old backcup sql from 1.10.2.
What do I do next?
I have read the upgrade procedures but they are either vague or I am so inexperienced I don't understand

Ok I've made a little progress with the original error.
I googled conflicts between php-5.3 and b2evo and found this thread, a guy with the exact problem.
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-862216.html
So I logged into admin/appsettings/plugins and I went through all the plugins and disabled one at a time and when I disabled "Auto Links" the missing content all came back :)
So any ideas how I fix it?
I can keep it disabled for the time being.

Are you trying to use b2evo 1.10 on PHP 5.3 ? That's a bad idea.
Upgrade to v4
Check if the content is existing in the database ..
I dont have much idea what might went wrong, but i know one thing:
your b2evo version is very VERY VERY VERY old.
You should seriously consider upgrading.
