Nobody told that there will be a new release next week, nor next month.
So it is up to you to consider if you will do those major hacks.

It was good that Francois wrote a blog entry on b2evolution.net on the progress of the project, but I guess that people might start asking questions again - when it will be; is it not dead; ...

If you look at the cvs files, you'd know that the project isn't dead. I haven't had a chance to look recently, but it's rare that it's more than a day since the last edit to the new release, so it's far from dead.
