I am going to be moving my blog from its current location to a new domain and would like to keep all my original posts. That is, I am moving it from http://www.rtrc.net/blog to http://www.theparchment.org
As long as your current host supports some sort of export utility that your new host can handle, then yes. In fact it can be easy.
Using cpanel just pick backup and backup your database, then your whole web. That is, back up your whole web if you don't already have copies of the files on your PC. My host is currently experiencing an issue with the backup utility, so I go into phpmyadmin and select each database then select export. I found that I can't just paste those files into phpmyadmin sql function, but I could finally get the data back into the database. Basically I had to remove spaces between fields and values. 'Big pain in the butt' would be an understatement.
I trashed some of my posts is how I figured this out. OUCH!
Anyway once you have your database and files backed up you need to bring them back into your new host. If you new host has cpanel then use backup to restore the database. Obviously you have to have the database first, which is something I always let Fantastico create for me. Anyway you then need to FTP your files to your new server space. Once done you should be hooked up.
Important thing is to back up your existing database first! Use every utility your current host provides to download as many backups as you possibly can. Small or subtle differences might make the difference between painless restoration or the type of hassle I went through.
