Thanks. At least, it is an answer =)
Do you know when the 1.8 version will/should be released?
It is nice to be on this forum. I hope I will stay there. I'm looking for a real multi-user CMS and I still don't know which one to choose. If I choose b2, I think you will have to "endure" me for a long time ;)

korbn,
I tried out several CMSs and b2evolution stood above the rest. If you decide to use it, we'll be happy to help you along.
Do you know when the 1.8 version will/should be released?
That's the same question we've been asking for over a year now. 0.9.2 is great. It's stable and fast. 1.8 adds a bunch of features and the plugin system, but they're taking their time and making sure it's right (which I respect). I finally got tired of waiting and upgraded my site to the development version of 1.8. There are a few bugs and more changes coming, but I've enjoyed it so far.
If you decide to go with 0.9.2, then this hack might help you get automatic blog creation for new users:

Thanks a lot, this hack will definately help me a lot. I tried many other CMS as well but I'm thinking more and more about b2evolution. But I'm still thinking.
I'm working on a web-based game and we would like to offer the possibility to player to have their own RP blog. Since the game is getting bigger and bigger everyday, we are aiming (hoping) for about few thousand blogs and the system should be able to work with even more blogs (more than 10k)
So I want to be sure before chosing a CMS that it would be able to manage such a big number of blogs without driving me crazy! =)
And, since it is going to last for a long time (I hope so), I'm looking for a CMS that will keep evolve in the future (like b2).
6 korbn Jun 03, 2006 03:29
TSince, you already set up a multi-user CMS able to host around 1000 blogs, can you please tell me how long it takes to set up b2evolution with:
- a fully automatic registration service
- a design that the user can change in few clicks
and make it all stable.?
Thanks,
Korbn

hey i was looking to do the same thing, have a blog for each user when they sign up. and i found this post, i looked over the link
http://wonderwinds.com/hackblog.php/2005/08/14/automatically_create_a_blog_for_a_new_bl
but i can not find the htsrv directory what is it and where is it at.
i am far from the best at programming but i can figure most things out by trying them yet have no clue what or where the htsrv directory is any help would be great.
thanks

Um... it's a folder called "htsrv" that is part of the version that hack applies to, as well as every release ever made except the 1.6 ALPHA package. I've no idea if that hack will do anyone any good in 0.9.2 though. It was made using the latest release at the time.
9 earthman Jun 08, 2006 14:36
ya i am on .9.1 mostly becuase thatis what cpanel is on. i would think that the same code would apply to this. it woul d just be in another file but maybe the changed alot more. all i know is that i do not have a folder called htsv any place on my server.
that kinda sucks now i have to start the hunt all over again for a new blogging program for my site.
i might see what happens with the 1.6 but i do not like the idea of using a 1/2 build program.
thanks for the quick reply
10 personman Jun 08, 2006 15:08
Your cpanel install may have renamed the htsrv folder, which is a common method to try and hide your blog from spammers. But, even if it has a different name, the htsrv folder is there. It's the folder that has the file comment_post.php in it. If you give a link to your blog I'll help you find the folder.
Btw, 1.6-alpha isn't a 1/2 built program. It's more like 49/50 built. I've never heard of any major problems from it.
11 earthman Jun 08, 2006 15:58
thanks i found it right away, i just started looking at ever file in every folder until i found the files that matched. i will see how bad i mess up the program and then play around with 1.6 it is nice to know that it is almost done. the htsrv file was deep inside another folder with a odd name never would have thought it was it.
12 earthman Jun 08, 2006 16:43
hey if you are still around and have time to help.
i found every thing and it worked great but i am having 1 problem. if the new user goes to " user profile" i get this error
--- Warning: main(/home/earthman/public_html/Gen_blog/admin/_users_form.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/earthman/public_html/Gen_blog/admin/b2users.php on line 537

Does that path exist? If your installation doesn't have the htsrv directory where it belongs who's to say it has *anything* where it belongs! A link would help a lot...
14 earthman Jun 08, 2006 17:22
LOL i did not even think about that. you are right i just assumed that the path did exist. since your stuff is using the default paths i might need to change some stuff around. for now i clearned out the .9.1 install and i am installing 1.6 to see if the alpha version will work for me. but i am thinking about just using the .9.1 version or .9.2 version since i know they are bug free.
i wish i could send you a link but right now the server is locked and i would have to make a password for you. my friend who i am doing this with is a little paranoid about people messing with our server before it is up. but then again he does work for the IBM mastercard security division as a programer so he knows what can be done to a server.

Cool. 1.6 is pretty good. I'm using 1.7CVS - a version that will never come out - and don't see anything grossly wrong. Be aware that almost the entire file structure and file names are different though. Almost every hack made for older versions won't apply to 1.6, though there are a few hacks and plugins that are for 1.6 (only).

To add an automatic registration service, I used a hack on 0.9.2. I don't remember where it was on this forum (EDIT: you can find the hack made by EdB on this page)
but I attach the new files to this message. There are five of them. Just replace the old one by the new one and it should work (backup the old files before, you never know!)
I have few other prioirity right now but I should work soon on a fully multi-user hack for 0.9.2. I will put everything on the forum as soon as it is done.

Well lets see... Oh yeah: IN THIS THREAD! TWICE!!! A thread YOU started.
4 days ago was the last time you were at my blog, and you were there a LOT. You visited my blog post that shows the hack for v0.9.0.12 several times. You've changed ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from what I posted so long ago!!! The only thing you did was check out my hack in version 0.9.2 and found it to be useful. Now you don't remember but here are the "new" files? Yeah. Sure.
korbn wrote:

I'd love to see the drawbacks to this hack corrected, and trust me: I know them well. For example Gérard had a problem that I'm sure you'll fix. (Good luck - I had to hack dozens of files to resolve that issue for an installation I did.) BTW there are many issues with that hack that limit it to only those who understand the code and can figure out how to tweak it for their application. Lots of little details need improvement and/or correction, but I'm sure it's coming.
Adding to an existing hack is cool. Blatantly copying someone else's work and 'forgetting' where you took it from then pretending you did something 'new' isn't.

Peace, man. I checked sooooooooo many thread those last days (and not only on this forum). I don't remember everything. I'm sorry if you misunderstood me but I never say this was my job. I said: "I used a hack on 0.9.2. I don't remember where it was on this forum". Then I gave the "new" files - the hacked one - as opposed to the "old" files - the original one. Read again my post, and you will see there is nothing wrong about this. I just wanted to help earthman that contact me by mp. I didn't have time to read all the thread to find back the link.
Do you really think I'm stupid? I would pretend I did something I didn't on a message that is following another message posted by the same guy that did the thing I pretend to do (what a complicate sentence! =))
And when I said "I have few other prioirity right now but I should work soon on a fully multi-user hack for 0.9.2." I'm not talking at all about improving yours. Your hack allows automatic registration and it is a really good job. But it is not enough for making b2 a real multi-blog CMS. There should be other option. For instance, it is not possible for every blogger to have his own design. You know what I'm talking about, since you answered to my thread: http://forums.b2evolution.net/viewtopic.php?p=38040
So please calm down. I don't see the point of stealing your work. You're giving it freely. I have nothing to earn by doing this, so why would I do it? I'm not the NSA and you're not JFK =)
I'm sorry if I made you think I wanted to steal your job, but it wasn't my intention in any case.

No worries!!!
My hack NEEDS improvement so if it's a good starting point then go for it. I've done it and I'll do it again. After all, ever since Ug the caveman figured out
if( ! $kill_dinosaur ) {
no_food_for_tribe();
}
we've all been building on something someone wrote.
Cool. Peace indeed! My first draft was a lot more meaner cuz the idea gets me a bit tweaked ya know? Anyway water under the bridge. After I posted my rant I thought to myself "you dummy - you have no idea if your hack actually works in 0.9.2 or not so what is your problem?"
Yeah. I did a "anyone can register" version from 0.9.1 and I know it's a hell of a hack to do it right. Might as well be a new branch for all the hackage it takes. If you're into it we can talk a bit. I did major hackage for a site that went nowhere. Blogs for people in the military. Used a 'secret word' to automagically create a blog. Then figured each blogger could create his/her own secret word and share it with whoever back home (or the rest of their unit) so they could get posting permission on that blog. Built in a method where the "imperial admins" could throw down a new installation and have it automagically linked to all the other installations since we didn't know how big it might get. Hack the livid snot out of 0.9.1 to do it. Every time I turned around I found another hole I needed to close. Turns out it went nowhere. Good thing I was unemployed at the time else I'd have never gotten it done on time... Anyway I got all the files and I reckon most of them will apply to 0.9.2 though none of it applies to 1.6 and beyond.
20 korbn Jun 09, 2006 16:09
Anyway, I read Gérard post on your blog and I really don't know what happened on his blog. When Mister X creates a new blog, he can't see Miss Y's blog in the admin page. I look everywhere, and I don't have the same problem than Gérard. The only one that can see everything, is the admin.
I see only five explainations (tell me if you see more):
- - this problem doesn't existe anymore on 0.9.2
- Gérard messes up with authorisation (maybe he gave all the user the ability to see other blogs in the admin page)
- I'm dumm and I couldn't find the bug even if it is here.
- I'm a genius sleepwalker and I fixed the security problem while I was asleep.
- the fairy goblins came during my sleep and fixed everything.[/list:u]
I don't know what you think about this, but the last one is the most conceivable explaination for me.
I think someone is working on this, but I'm not sure who it is. This feature, like so many things will be done with a plugin and won't really be available until 1.8 is released. I know that's not a very helpful answer, but that's the best I can do. By the way, welcome to the forum.
