I installed 2.4.0-RC1 for my sister and brother-in-law. He is an avid photographer. For the first time ever I tinkered with the 'photoblog' skin while talking with my sister on the phone. We were both surprised when we found a link that seemed to make a thumbnail gallery out of the single picture we posted.

Sorry to not have better info, but I'm pretty sure the photoblog skin will serve this purpose nicely - just poke around it and see if it serves your needs.
